Top Five: Most Shocking Drag Race Eliminations (Pre-Season 7)

This week really had me thinking. [Warning Spoiler for Season 7 in the next sentence] Trixie Mattel going home in only the fourth episode after being pegged as a finalist by many fans caused a lot of controversy. People absolutely lost their minds. But you know what? This is not the first time we've seen the wrong queen go home. In six seasons (seven, with All Stars), Ru has been a beacon of truth, but being there, as opposed to being an onlooker, can cloud your judgment. I'm not saying Ru was wrong, but he can't always know how attached fans could get to a particular contestant.

Thus, I've taken it upon myself to remind everyone of the past shocking eliminations in Drag Race history.  Trust me, there have been a few.

Note: This list is purposely excluding Willam (who was disqualified, not eliminated) and Tammie Brown's Season One appearance (because she flat out gave up).

5. Honey Mahogany and Vivienne Pinay (Season Five)

Ok, no shade, but we all sort of knew somewhere inside that these two weren't top three, but with the mess of contestants that made up season five, it was really a shame to see two queens that I thought had great potential not only go home, but go home at the same time. In the first (and as of this writing only) double elimination in the show's history, both Honey and Viv went home due to a boring lip sync, relying on pretty, and kaftans. Of course that didn't stop me from interviewing both of them.

Kevin Mikal Drops Yummy New Video

I haven't had a chance to mention Kevin Mikal on the site before, I could give you a ton of excuses as to why, but you all know why this video is getting attention. It's got Willam. Oh, Willam. I mean, at least I didn't cover their song "Blurred Bynes", right? Check out "Candy Yum Yum"!

Ok, so it's not only because Willam is in it. I mean it's got Honey Mahogany (whom I interviewed! Yay me!) and the lovely boys of Gay of Thrones (if you haven't seen their hilarious take on hit TV Show Game of Thrones, check them out on Youtube!). Jokes aside, this song is pretty addicting. While it's not groundbreaking, it is fun and upbeat, which is something I always love posting about here on Taking Over The Universe.

The song is an over-sexualized metaphor using candy instead of, well, you know. It features Willam heavily as the "video ho", feeding Mikal all sorts of candy and looking stunning on her own. Kevin is very gorgeous, and likes to push the boundaries of masculine and feminine -- meaning he's completely ripped and "manly" but isn't afraid to wear half shirts and booty shorts. Honey Mahogany is only featured in one sequence, and Julian and Jonathan only pop up occasionally. I guess it can be difficult to fit in that many guest stars in as short a time as a music video.

Interview: Honey Mahogany Is Sticky And Sweet

Honey Mahogany may have been booted from the ever growing in popularity RuPaul's Drag Race, but she certainly isn't letting that get her down. She still has extensive touring to do, music to write, and a little interview to give this blogger right here. Honey Mahogany Releases Sticky "It's Honey" Video

Every year, more and more queens for RuPaul's Drag Race turn to music to not only express themselves, but cash in on their new found fame. This season took me by surprise, however, when one queen in particular started releasing songs from the day the casting was announced. And now, fresh off her controversial elimination, she's released her first video. The song is called "It's Honey" and, yes, it is pretty sticky.



There is so much going on in this video. We see her as a dominatrix, we see her as an Amazon warrior, we see her as a campy bride. She is a chameleon in this video, and it probably has a lot to do with her Drag Race stint. She was most criticized for not showing off her figure enough, and this video is all body, body, body.

Also, as a treat for the viewers, other Drag Race divas fan-favorite Jujubee and season three winner Raja appear in a couple of scenes across the board. These two are becoming regular video hos, aren't they? I mean that in the best, most loving way possible. Raja's my bitch. I'll interview her one day, just wait and see.

Back to Honey, this video is a bit all over the place. While I like seeing all the different sides of her, it does create a bit of a mess. Does she look gorgeous? Yes. Does the video have any sort of order or plot? No. The video is made up of a bunch of different scenes, each with different outfits, each with her lip syncing to her song. Usually this isn't a bad thing, but here, none of the looks flow together, aside from showing all of her various looks that she can pull off. This serves as both a positive and a negative for the work as a whole.

This one thing is just me nitpicking. The video as a whole, especially for a first attempt, is very well done. She obviously was aiming to make something of quality that fans could enjoy, and seeing as the song is her theme song, she definitely accomplished what she wanted. This video will please the fans she's already got, and it just may change the minds of those who doubted her on the show.

2012's Biggest Misses: Honey Mahogany Sings

So here's the deal, for the first full week of 2013, I am going to be going posting like crazy to showcase a ton of artists that I missed over the past year. Lots of amazing things happened, and being just one person, there was no way I could keep up with it all. Therefore, these first seven days of the new year, I'm bringing you the biggest "no duh!" moments I missed over the past year!

First up, we have Ms. Honey Mahogany, one of the upcoming queens from Ru Paul's Drag Race season five. She wasted no time at all getting her music out there, and I think such a bold action deserves a bit of applause, doncha think?

Pretty much from the day she was announced as being a contestant on RPDR5 she announced her debut single "It's Honey." Suspicious? Yes. Smart? Also yes. Now that the show is in it's fifth season, the number of queens that have been on the show are becoming a bit overwhelming, and with the show at the risk of becoming like America's Next Top Model with the winners being forgotten a month after the show ends, it is probably for the best that she cash in as soon as possible.

The song has me on the fence, and my true opinion on it depends on the truth behind it. If it is a serious attempt at writing, I would have to shake my head. However if it is what it appears to be, which is a parody that is poking fun at her name and bringing on the camp, it is amazing. Confused yet?

Well, you see, the song from a musical standpoint is not something you'd hear on the radio or top 40 playlists. It has a lot of disco to it, and the singing gets very sexual very quick. I'm not talking Kanye West "I'm going to threaten you into sex" sexual, but more like Raja "listen to me moan for three minutes" sexual. It's awkward, yet at the same time a bit genius.

The more I listen to it, the more I'm sure the song is poking fun at herself, but one can't be too sure. I guess I'll just have to wait until she makes some sort of statement about it. Perhaps I can even get her to comment for TOTU. Only time will tell. This one was a narrow miss, as the song came out mid December, but I promise more is to come! Stay with me, people!
