Skin Wars Season 2 Episode 6 [Review]

It's that time again! The season has really picked up and we down to the best of the best already! It looks like there have been a few sleeper hits, and a few people who didn't live up to their hype. Anything can happen in reality television, and given the show's history of shocking eliminations and even more shocking winners, I'm sure we're all in for a surprise every week.

Immediately upon entering the work room they all see they have their own chests. Robin and Craig are there waiting for them, and Rebecca announces they are going to have to do paintings based on their assigned Victorian era jewelry. Dawn Marie is the most excited, but anybody who's seen reality TV before knows that the people most excited about it never win (Sorry Dawn, just speaking from experience). The jewelery was all gorgeous, and everybody seemed to get something that is very workable.

Avi is completely lost and has no idea about the subject, which is a recurring theme. Lana has her self esteem restored from her bottom two encounters the past few weeks. Cheryl had a very interesting idea, but being able to pull it off is going to be a whole other story.

When they're all done there are some fun ones and some not-so-fun ones. Avi's painting kind of missed the mark I feel. He didn't work the jewelery in. Dawn actually surprised me. Her enthusiasm came out very strongly to make a beautiful painting. Aryn's was my favorite with her extreme mermaid. Cheryl's reflection actually worked out pretty well and captured her style perfectly. Rio's while beautiful, completely missed the mark on this one. Lana was another one who I thought missed the mark with the Victorian era part, but really did a great detail.

The top three painters are Cheryl Ann, Aryn, and Lana. I really thought that Aryn had this one because she really blew it out of the park. No shade towards Lana, but I don't think this was the right choice for a winner here. I believe both Cheryl and Aryn were more deserving of the win in this instance, and this is probably the only time you'll see me advocating for Cheryl Ann. Like probably ever.

Rebecca wastes no time in telling them about their main challenge. While the mini challenge was legit past, they are now going to have to paint faux-future. It's time for them to do a steampunk show, just in time for GSN to promote it's new show STEAMPUNK'D. And I'll probably be reviewing that, too. They're told to update it to current times and add color. I smell huge disaster. Lana, being the winner, gets to take thirty minutes away from any painter. Instantly Cheryl flashes back to episode one when she screwed over Lana. Good luck lady!

Five hours really doesn't seem like enough time to do something so elaborate, but the show has done crazier stuff in such a short time. By the time they get into the work room, they all seem to have their ideas down. Avi, once again, is confused by the topic in the most adorable way. I sometimes wonder if he's pretending to not know, because he always ends up on top. Dawn, on the complete opposite side of the spectrum, is totally confident.

Everybody is pretty on edge with worry on who Lana is going to sick the punishment on. Nobody wants that time taken away from them on such a crucial challenge. But before we get to that, they drag in Carson Kressly, the guest judge, along with his IRL BFF Ru and Robin. They get to go around the work room and see the half-completed pieces. The judges really didn't do a whole lot other than not understand Kyle's new prosthetic concept, wonder how Avi had never heard of Steampunk, and worry that Cheryl didn't have any steamy-esque elements at all. The judges visits never seem to do anything to help the show, really, so meh.

Now it's time to take time away. Lana seemed to be having a tough time at first, but then quickly blurted out Cheryl Ann. She decides to use this time to go and snoop on her competitors. We then have a really annoying montage of her asking stupid questions over and over. It only seemed to motivate her to work harder when her model returned, though.

Let's check out the main stage!

Cheryl Ann - She really took the colorful note to a whole new level. She kept true to her art style, and even put in some steampunk elements. I actually like this Cheryl piece.
Avi - It was a bit messy, but it really looked amazingly detailed and colorful. This is what the judges were asking for. He nailed it.
Lana - She had one of the more interesting pieces, but my problem with it was the only really "steampunk" part of it was the prosthetic. The painting, aside from the fish on the back, was both steam and punk free.
Aryn - I loved this one so much. It got everything the judges asked for. It felt steampunk but modern at the same time, and it was very colorful. Her concept of an absinth fairy was also genius. Go Team Gao!
Kyle - As much as I love Kyle I really didn't like this painting as much as the others. A lot of the details didn't feel there. The colors and concept were fun, but I don't see it as my favorite for the week. (sorry kyle! Team Gao still loves you!)
Dawn Marie - She really got a lot of colors and is true to the steampunk vibe. She did a lot of detailing, but once again her clothing didn't seem as "right" as some of her competitors. She took the challenge the most literal of everyone, which will either save her, or send her home.
Rio - Can I just say I don't get it? I didn't see anime or steampunk, and only one of those was even the challenge. It was a total miss for me today.

After Dawn and Cheryl get torn into hardcore, Avi and Lana get all the praise, and Rio gets a big question mark from the entirety of America, the judges start to deliberate. Of course Cheryl starts complaining that she had time take away from her instead of Avi.

It's time for the tops and bottoms. Avi, Aryn, and Lana are picked for the top three. The winner is obviously Avi, as the obvious winner for this episode -- hands down. This leaves Dawn, Rio, and Kyle for the bottom, and I feel like I'm about to get pissed. And that gut feeling is confirmed when they say that Dawn Marie is going home. It's not a casualty for Team Gao, but it's still a sad thought because she had become one of my favorites for the show. She was a sweet woman and I hope to see more of her in the future.
