For a beginning, the show started off pretty slow. Everybody was picking up the pieces from what happened at the reunion and off screen in between seasons. We found out Phaedra's husband Apollo is going to jail for a very long time and we also find out (via the opening) that Porsha is no longer a cast member -- well kind of. We'll get to that later.
The real drama started at Cynthia's party where she was celebrating being old but still awkwardly passable as attractive. Here we saw Cynthia, Kandi, Kenya, and the new housewife who was awkwardly missing from the first episode Claudia, all gossiping in the corner until the surprise guest shows up. It's Apollo, and he's there to talk to Kenya. He reveals that he didn't actually see her in L.A. and has been lying about the whole "Textgate" bullcrap from the beginning. For two years. This was a huge bombshell for fans of the show as this one event was actually the domino effect to turn the entire cast against Kenya.
As word gets around town, everyone has their own opinion of how things should be handled. First there's Phaedra, who really feels like she may owe the woman an apology. There's Kandi who says they all need to rally behind Kenya. And then there's Nene, who says Apollo lied about lying and that she's still guilty. It's hard to tell who is the real liar, especially given everyone's history of talking behind each others' backs.
It looks like Apollo's confession will be the driving force behind what happens this year, at least for the beginning. Many of the events from the season mega trailer have already been shown on screen leaving a big gap to be filled wherein we have next to no idea where we are going.
The segue into textgate resolution wasn't the only insanity that happened. We also have Nene and Cynthia falling out, as well as Porsha (who may have been taken out of the credits but is still a major player for now) becoming Nene's new bestie. Nene, oddly enough, seems to be taking the high road. Aside from a couple of kiki-ing jokes, she really hasn't said anything bad. Cynthia, on the other hand, has been pointing out a lot of things about Nene that were uncalled for, and keeps saying over and over she's so glad not to be involved in the drama, while being pretty dramatic on her own. I have to say that I'm pretty much done with her.
Porsha, however, wanted to clear the air with Cynthia so she decided to meet her for lunch. The one mistake she made was showing up an hour late, which set off Cynthia to the max. Nothing was resolved and only more problems were made as they tried to talk over each other and ended up leaving angry.
Our final sequence started off as a bit touching. Kandi had already made up her mind that Kenya was innocent and decided to apologize. Mid way through their talk, Kandi let slip that Nene and Porsha had said that Apollo was lying about lying, which set her off into a downward spiral. Kandi finally managed to calm her down, but it looks like she may have done more damage than good.
This season is starting off with a pretty strong bang. These women have been friends with each other for a few years now, and they've all been at odds with everyone at one time or another. New odd alliances are formed, while others are fading. I guess the show is just evolving again.
What I find awkward is that we have this amazing new housewife, Claudia, who we barely get to see so far. She was absent from the first episode, a background character in the second, and we got a minute long crash course in who she was in the third before putting most of her stories on the backburner because Nene was back on the scene. Meanwhile Porsha, newly dubbed "friend of the housewives" is getting a lot of screen and interview time. Don't get me wrong, I love Porsha, but she's become a focus and a driving force and she's not even on the cast list. I can see how her history has her planted in the story for what's going on, but they could have easily downplayed her.
This season has a long way to go before it becomes as legendary as those that came before it, but with the cast they have right now, I can see it easily doing so. I sincerely hope we get to see more of Claudia, and I hope we get to see many of the others finally drop their fake facades and become real people.
