RuPaul's Drag Race Season 7 Episode 3 [Review]

It's Tuesday again! Which means it's time for Drag U Tue. Wait. We haven't done that in forever. Why again? Oh yeah, Drag U got canceled. Where is All Stars 2, again, Ru? Anyway, Tuesday means more RuPaul's Drag Race reviews with my revolving door of reads and truths. You ready for things to get hairy? I apologize for that pun. It didn't work on many levels.

I really do like this trend they started last year of cutting immediately to the post-elimination shots as soon as the episode starts. It keeps the energy going from the last week (and is even more intense when you are marathonning this!). Katya narrowly escaped elimination. Ok, well, let's be fair. Sasha was going to go home early, the editing made that clear enough, and with Katya being one of the strongest competitors, it was obvious she was going home.

After a few reads from Jasmine, we get Ru sending everyone a message with it's own new catchphrase that feels very awkwardly shoehorned in. He makes some very obvious references to Shakespeare, but these uneducated queens have no idea what he's talking about. They are still completely oblivious to what this week is all about.

After a few comical remarks from Ru on his Hover-Round, he reveals that this week's mini challenge makes a little more sense than last week! Yay! But not a whole lot. The girls are challenged to dress up as old ladies. Ok. Well some of them got it, while others didn't what-so-ever. Pearl was actually a standout this week, which was a bit of a surprise for me.  Violet, on the other hand, fell flat on her back, unable to get up.

The winners end up being Max (I completely 100% agree) and Kennedy (not so much agree), and they are the team captains for the main challenge. The girls pick their teams one by one, and surprise! Violet is picked last. She still has no idea why, too. Sad, really. Speaking of sad, Pearl has no idea what MacBeth is. Really, queen?

So the girls are in two teams now, Team Max, which has to perform a play titled Romy and Juliet, and Team Phaedra Parks, which has to perform MacBitch. Kennedy (Phaedra) has a lot of trouble corralling her team into submission and they kind of walk all over her. In a bad judgment call, she says they all need to go rehearse on their own. Uhoh.

This is an obvious mistake as they take the stage to shoot their scenes in front of Ru and Michelle. They are a complete mess. Trust me, when Violet and Kandy come out as the shining stars, you know you've completely messed up. Kandy seems to have been knocked down seven or eight pegs as far as her ego is concerned, which makes her a more tolerable person. Go you! The only person who has any idea what they are doing is Katya. Go figure. She's the star of this show, hunty.

The other team has it a bit more together, save for one actress. Jaidynn is very off putting with her acting, causing the judges to call her out. Jaidynn breaks down, confessing that she is letting too much get in her way to win. In a beautiful moment, the team comes together around her, and being the born leader and kind heart she is, Max approaches her, letting her know that she is a bad bitch and a fierce competitor and that she has got this. I love Max so much, and seeing this kind side of her really got me to love her even more.

Welcome to Team Gao, Max!

With guest judges Kat Dennings from 2 Broke Girls and Mel B from the world famous Spice Girls and America's Got Talent,  we are ready to get this runway underway! The theme this week is bearded queens! And go!

Max - This girl always has something fresh and fun for the runway. The pencil thin beard and mustache really throw back to Milk from last year, but take it to a new level. She has a great eye for fashion, and can pull a look for anything together.
Ginger Minj - As much as I love her, it's always her runway looks that bring her down to the middle of the pack for me. She's got the humor and the attitude, but when it comes to fashion, she's not always on point. This was a big miss. The corset doesn't work, and the beard looks kinda dank, gurl.
Trixie Mattel - This girl was so close to being my top pick this week, it's not even funny. I love the wings, I love the dress, the beard and the hair flow together like some kind of weird Greek god. I can't get enough of this look.
Mrs. Kasha Davis - This girl broke into Manila Luzon's house and stole her wigs! I love the black/blonde thing going on, but again, the beard just looks like an afterthought and is not incorporated into the look at all.
Jaidynn Diore Fierce - No gurl. No. Your hair and beard don't even match. I swear these girls got dressed to look fabulous and then remembered at literally the last second that they had to have a beard and slapped something on. For ANY other runway I would love this, but today it's a no.
Miss Fame - All biased that I feel towards her aside, I feel like she's one of the few that got the challenge. She looks like an elegant lady and a man all at once. She got the androgyny of the challenge and made it work for her style. Plus, going red-head is always a good move -- as long as your beard matches!
Phaedra Kennedy Davenport - Ok, I'll stop overplaying that joke now. Anyway, this is the worst beard of them all. It literally looks like pubic nut hair taped to her face. I couldn't even make my gaze down to see the dress because all I saw were pubes. Gross. Super, super gross.
Katya - Hail to the chief! S/He's the chief and s/he needs hailing! I am loving this look, and being that she was the only one to save her team, it's definitely my favorite look of the night. Katya is always a bright star!
Jasmine Masters - This girl was bragging about her dress being amazing, but honestly I've seen it before. Her five-oclock shadow barely meets the requirements of the challenge, but all else looks fairly decent. She's more middle of the pack in my opinion for the runway. The challenge is another story.
Pearl - She really took a risk with not having real hair for her beard. I have to say, though, I liked it. The glitter really made the gender lines even more blurred than the makeup did. It felt more high-end than most of the group. Her outfit, however, was very amateur. So close, dear. So close.
Kandy Ho - She did well this week because, well, it was a beard challenge. Should I say more?
Violet Chachki - On the other end of the spectrum from Ginger is Violet. She wreaks during challenges, but rules the runway. She had the best look overall, but damn did she blow the challenge.

We got to see the feature length performances when they were on stage, but to be honest, I hated both. They were simply a collection of previous contestants' catch phrases, such as "Backrolls!?" and "Cupcake" and "Gagging" and "Deathdrops" and "Tuckaho". Lord. I'm sure there was a "This is not RuPaul's Best Friends Race" quote in the unedited version.

Max's team wins (obviously) and Max is the winner of the whole thing (more obviously). The other team gets read the house down. Seriously, Katya was the only one to get positive remarks. The rest of the girls were ripped to shreds. Yikes.

In the end, it's Not-Phaedra Parks and Jasmine Masters put up against each other. The lip sync was nothing to bat an eye at, and we kept getting remarks about how they were super close. Weird. We never saw that. Sadly, Jasmine was sent home. I was getting used to her comical reads. The first sad elimination of the season has happened people.

And welcome to Team Gao Max and Ginger. Please join Katya in the VIP room.
