Is it that time of the week again? Man, how time moves so fast. I am now incredibly nervous each week because now we are down to just a few contestants, all of which was incredibly talented. I don't want to see anybody go home, but somebody has to win, and with the season coming to a close very soon, it will be interesting to see who fails and who succeeds. This week will push everyone to their limits and once again, we will have to say goodbye to someone we've gotten to know and love.
We start off immediately into the work room, and the first thing they see is a circus tent. They're told they will create a body painting inspired by classic circus themes. They are told to do either front or back, and chose what they do very carefully. They get their time started and everyone runs for what they want to do.
Aryn goes for a cannonball woman, while Avi is going for the lizard woman. Cheryl Ann decides to make her model and elephant, which is a bit of a weird choice, but then again, it is Cheryl Ann. Lana's is looking more like a story board than a character, and I'm not sure if that's what they are wanting. Rio is doing a caricature of a strong man, to Kyle's annoyance. Overall this mini challenge seemed more like a waste of time, especially for Avi who finished thirty minutes early. Can we say winner?
Speaking of Avi, he got very positive remarks from the judges. Kyle's piece, while he was well done, got called out for his bad time management. Ary's cannonball woman really worked it this time and made everyone light up. Rio didn't get called out for not doing the full body, which was weird. His looked more cartoonish. Cheryl Ann really made the elephant element work. I have to give it to her on that one. Lana's was a big mess here. There was a lot going on and didn't really feel like someone could focus on any one part of it.
The top three are announced and I'm not surprised. It's Aryn, Cheryl Ann, and Rio. All three were doted on very much during the walk through, so it was to be expected that they all made it. The winner ends up being Aryn! Go Team Gao! I really feel like she has been the sleeper hit for this season, as she is constantly overlooked, but always making top notch paintings. Rebecca takes them immediately into the new challenge, bringing in circus artists for them to paint. But it doesn't end there! They will be in teams of two.
They start to get paired up, and things get a bit weird. We have Aryn and Avi, Lana and Rio, and Kyle and Cheryl Ann. Right before they go, Rebecca throws in that they will have to work with Ultraviolet light. Everyone but Avi is excited, who says he's never done it before, which means he will win the challenge because every time he says he's never heard of something he always wins. Ugh. Why is he so talented!?
This year we they have black light boxes, which is a major step up from this challenge last year, but painting three models in six hours, especially in black light, is going to be pretty difficult. It seems like they are going to have fun with this one.
Right off the bat, we have some drama between Lana and Rio. Both of them have strong ideas so they need to need to be on top, but neither really wants to back down. Meanwhile, Aryn and Avi seem to be a match made in heaven. Avi has won several challenges and Aryn has been in the top or won every week, so they are the biggest threat to everybody it seems. With our last team, Cheryl Ann backs down and lets Kyle take the lead, as he is more familiar with acrobatics and she feels he can lead them in the direction that will land them a win.
Rebecca brings in Frank Gatson, the choreographer for so many famous performers including Beyonce and Michael Jackson. I'm not really sure what he has to do with this challenge or how he fits in, but it's nice to see a higher end guest. Once again the walk through is far too early on in the painting, and it was kind of a pointless segment for the episode. We didn't learn anything, and there was no way to see if they were in the right direction or not.
It was really strange to see Cheryl Ann take the back seat to Kyle. I almost feel like it's a tactic to keep her alive if they end up in the bottom. It seems like she's planning something, anyway. Avi is actually struggling in this one, as he and Aryn feel like their pieces do not feel complete no matter how hard they try to go at it. And just like that, the time is up, and they are shuffled off to the main stage.
Time for the main stage!
Lana/Rio - I am madly in love with this. Their male model with his gills, their colorful aerial performer, it all worked so well. The colors were fantastic and worked in the black light so incredibly well. They were my favorites hands down. No questions.
Cheryl Ann/Kyle - They had some very fun designs, but it was a bit of a lack of focus. There was a lot going on, and the colors didn't pop as much as I would have liked. They needed more of the pinks and yellows to make them glow more. I did like the hour glass theme, though. The rest of it was a bit confusing.
Aryn/Avi - They got the colors down pact, and their fire breather was breath taking, but the two ladies were not my favorite. The faces painted on the fronts didn't make sense to me. I did like the details and intricacy of the overlapping parts, but the colors didn't pop as much as they could have.
It looks like this may be the hardest week thus far. Everybody did their best, and they all put on a good show. Nobody was a clear messup here, and there was only one team that really stood out as a winner. It was tough to pick anybody, and the extended judges deliberation was evidence of that.
With the painters back on stage, the judges decide to pick their tops and bottoms. Rio and Lana were picked as the winning team, of course. Only one can win, however, and Lana edges out her team mate, giving her a win for the first time in a good while. She's come back from being on the bottom to being a star again. Go Lana! The bottom two end up being Kyle and Cheryl Ann, and of course my gut sinks. Kyle is the one sent home, leaving Team Gao with only one member now. Cheryl Ann has been spared once again. This season won't be the same without Kyle. It's hard to see him go.
