Before I start this week's review I have to say that this was probably the most difficult episode I've ever watched for this series. Much like the past few seasons of New Jersey, the family ties that the show brings out only to have torn apart or crushed really hit home with many viewers including myself. While not quite on the Giudice family scale, the Richards family has it's own issues, and seeing this episode really broke my heart. Now lets get on with it, and I hope my opinions don't hurt anybody with this one.
The episode starts out simple enough. We get to see the girls on a trip to the spa together. Kyle has organized a trip for everybody (sans Yolanda who is still in New York), and oddly enough everybody showed up. Despite their differences with Brandi, both Eileen and Lisa V decide to go on the trip, which I think is a nice step in the right direction for all three. For the beginning of the trip nobody was drinking, so that was probably why the first half of this went well.
At the parlor, they split the girls up into two groups. Hilariously enough Brandi got paired with both Eileen and Lisa V. Brandi actually managed to behave herself and be cordial to the two. I would have been really proud of Brandi had she not made things awkward in the car, but we'll get to that later.
Next the girls went inside to do wine tasting. This is where things got a bit sticky. I was really worried that Kim would be left out, and of course she was. Kyle invited her sister to an event that was all about drinking, which is something Kim has vowed to stay away from. Thankfully she saw fit to get up and remove herself from the situation, taking a call outside so that she could clear her head and resist temptation. Good for you, girl.
By the time they left, most of the group was drunk (don't they know you're supposed to spit the wine out?). Of course Brandi started up a sex talk about the biggest fantasies and Kyle was totally open not only about her own stripper fantasy, but about Lisa R's husband liking bush. Yikes. Kyle can be just as bad as Brandi sometimes when she's drunk, and yet she likes to point fingers. Odd.
Far removed from the drama is Yolanda. God I love this woman. She is so genuinely happy for her children. Both of her daughters are becoming successful models. It probably helps that their mom was big in the industry, but in all honesty both girls are talented and beautiful, so even without the connections they still would have been well off. Though she's not in the episode much, the scenes we do see of Yolanda helping her daughters choose their favorite modeling photos was very cute. She is one of the most grounded people on the show, and I love her for it.
Now for the sad part. Eileen, who is totally not to blame here, decided to throw a party to teach the girls how to play poker. Seeing as her husband is a big time poker player, it seemed like a no-brainer that this should be her party's theme. So she invites everyone (minus Lisa V who is on vacation) and they decide to travel in pairs.
Then it gets weird.
First off Kyle and Brandi take the same car and they actually get along (weird). They talk about how awkward it was for Kim and how Kyle apologized to her (awkward). Then, we see that Kim and Lisa R are riding together (really weird) wherein Kim starts acting... funny (weird, again). Kim keeps yelling obscenities at Lisa R who is trying her hardest to let them roll off her back (mega awkward). Kim says she wants to get back into show business and proceeds to ask Lisa how to be a seductress (weirdly awkward). Yeah. Thankfully they get to Eileen's shortly after.
When the poker game starts, most of the girls don't have a damn clue what's going on. While it was funny at first, but as do almost ever event more then three of these ladies attend, it spirals out of control quickly. Poor Eileen had no idea what to do as Kim uttered nonsense about jealousy, Brandi called everyone stupid multiple times, and Kyle got pissed and started yelling. These new girls might as well run for the hills.
This is where it gets hard for me. I know that sobriety can be a tough thing to attain and maintain. While others may be upset with Kim for admitting she took some kind of pills that made her loopy and aggressive, I feel like relapses do happen. This is nothing to be upset with her over. In fact, it should bring them all together again to try and help her.
Instead, Kyle tries to be overprotective, which is not what Kim needed right then, and things got out of hand. She tried to approach her sister, who was being safeguarded by Brandi. When she pushed Brandi out of the way, of course the crazy girl got a little crazy. Kyle was shoved back into the house from the doorway, where she stood in shock of what happened.
That's where the episode cuts off.
I feel so torn right now. I want Kim to be OK. I want her to be happy and healthy because I feel for her. I know what she's going through. I feel very uneasy about her friendship with Brandi. On one hand it appears that Brandi is being a very good friend, but when she says things like how nobody understands Kim but her to Kim's face, it really comes across like she's manipulating her. And with Brandi's own problems with alcohol they seem to be a very bad team regardless of how close they've become this year.
I have a strong feeling that this is the turning point in the season. Lines were drawn in multiple directions. This is the moment where the alliances form. Lisa R is no long on Kim's side. Kyle is definitely against Brandi again. Eileen is probably fed up with all of them. This is the moment that will redefine this season's group.
