Before start this review, can I just begin by saying that she looks gorgeous on the cover of this installment. I'm not sure if each part will have a different cover, but I'm satisfied with this one. It shows us a much more vulnerable look than what she has served us in the past. It creates a nice juxtaposition to her hard-edged girl power lyrics, creating a vibe that only Colette Carr could create.
The EP opens up with what we have all been waiting for - The full version of "F16". For those who have been following Colette closely, she debut this track on tour quite some time ago and has been using it as part of her setlist ever since. Putting this track on the first section of the EP was a good move, as people had been craving this addictive song in all it's high quality glory. No more shall we have to suffer through annoying crowd members screaming over the verses. Now we know exactly what she is talking about -- and it's about Kit Kats.
Actually, all but one of the songs on the EP had been previously played material. The second song, "Delusional" was actually leaked to the net ages ago, much to the despair of cCarr. I'm not sure if that was a publicity stunt (I mean the video never got taken down from YouTube, but she did seem legitimately angry over the posting), but it served her well, getting fans pumped up for the release in-between the numerous singles and promotional tracks she'd released.
"Delusional" is and has been one of my favorite songs by Colette. I had been staring at the fully loaded video for days before making the decision to actually listen to the leak -- I'm usually against leaks -- but after the initial shock factor was done with, I decided "Hey, I'm gonna be buying it when it comes out eventually, so why not?" This song is the perfect example of the persona Colette portrays in her music, which is being a hard-ass chica who doesn't need a man for anything. If you are being sketchy, she's gonna kick you to the curb. This unique and almost tomboy approach to the classic girl-power theme of music is what drew me to Colette in the first place.
The only new track on the album is "Killswitch" which falls in line with her more pop styled music. The track features a lot of vocal effects that deter from the feel of the song a bit, but it still is a fun track. Not the strongest, not the weakest.
The weakest is actually a song that I previously was in love with. "Like I Got A Gun" just doesn't stand up against the rest of the EP as well as it did on it's own as a single. I'm not saying that the song is bad by any means, but with three near perfect tracks put up next to it, the cracks start to show. The new section of rap by YG made the track feel much fresher, but didn't exactly justify buying the song over again.
I have to say that already I am positive that Skitszo in it's fully glory come July will be one of the best albums of 2013. This EP is a great sneak peek of what is to come. The question remains of exactly how much previously released material will be in the future installments. There are still two official singles ("Sex" and "Primo") that haven't been featured, as well as a whole slew of promotional singles ("Shuchya Mouth" "(B)A$$" & "No I.D."). Without any official word from cCarr yet, we will just have to wait another two months to see what surfaces.
This EP is proof of Colette's growth as an artist. She has come a long way from her first release "Sex Sells". Hell, she's come a long way since last year's "(We Do It) Primo". It makes me happy to see her not only maturing, but continuing to release quality top-notch music. Her style is down pack, the funding is there, and it's now time for Colette Carr to explode into the pop world. I believe that The "Skitszo Collection" will be the push she needs to burst into the pop scene.
