The time has come! We are finally going to take this rag-tag group of "top girls" to the next level and get to know who the top three are. It's going to be a weird one, with all of the show's major stars (Katya, Trixie, Max, Miss Fame, Trixie again) have sashayed away. It seems like they had a good idea who was going to the top no matter what horrid mistakes they made. Regardless, the top this year is far more balanced and fair than in years past, so let's see where this ride takes us.
They all head back into the work room once again after Katya's gone home. It was weird to see that the only one who cared was Ginger. I mean I expected Kennedy to be emotionless, but the other girls, Violet especially, had grown close to her in the past weeks. I really feel like of all the eliminations the ones with Kennedy in the bottom were the most shocking because she's still here. Why hasn't she made her exit yet?
Ru tells them all that the final challenge is -- surprise! -- a music video. They are going to be recording the official video for Ru's track "Born Naked", which has been featured pretty much zero times throughout the season. And here I was hoping that "Fly Tonight" would be the video and they would bring in Frankmusik for the shoot. Well I was hella wrong here. The kicker -- whoever goes home in this episode will be removed completely from the video's final form. Dayum!
The show has invited the beautiful Candis Cayne on to do the choreography for the ladies. We don't get to see a whole lot of what's going on with the prep work for this, as it's spliced in between the "lunch with Ru" pieces. Honestly I was never a fan of the lunch segments for the finalists. I feel like a lot of the stories are overhyped or pushed a bit far. The only one that really connected with me at all was Pearl revealing in a few vague statements that she was abused in some fashion as a child and that her young years were the worst of her life.
Aside from this I find the whole joke of them having a single tic tac for lunch is old. Of all the stuff that happens every single season (Snatch game, the -insert random name here- ball, the library, the puppets, the music video), this has to be the most tired. The joke wasn't funny the first time, and it's not funny now. This part really serves no purpose, as getting to know Ru is a sham because, if you pay attention, Ru guides the conversation. He already knows about the traumatic situations and he doesn't even seem to be listening to them as they tell their stories. He just wants to make good TV. I think this is one part of the show that could use retiring.
The choreography is another non-surprise surprise. They are in front of a green screen. Just like every season the girls' parts of the video are so low quality and "meh" while Ru's parts are super professional. Simply plopping drag queens in front of a green screen does not a video make. Regardless, they have their pros and cons. Ginger and Pearl both have wig malfunctions, Violet can't sing and dance at the same time, and Kennedy is a judgmental jerk.
Speaking of being judgmental, all of the girls really hit Pearl hard. I know that she does have some very odd dancing, but really it looks intense and fun. I mean nobody clocked Jaidynn for that same arm flailing thing she did every damn time, but they are going to clock someone as amazing as Pearl? Right. Honey it's a no from this peanut gallery.
The acting went way better. With the exception of Kennedy who always sucks at acting, the girls did an amazing job. I love seeing Ginger act. She is so genius. It was also a pleasant surprise seeing both Pearl and Violet stepping the game up and acting their asses off. They all were playing each others parts at some point, and I'm guessing the final video will be each girls best character. Who knows? But I really loved seeing Grandpa Ru, as well as drunk Mama Pearl. Nothing beats that.
Let's get into the final runway. Category is Your Best Drag!
Kennedy Davenport - I know this joke is getting tired but isn't Phaedra Parks a real woman? 'Cmon now. But seriously she looks like a pride float. Is this cliche dress really your best look? I mean we haven't exactly see you rock it on the runway much before now, but still. I'm sure you got something better than that.
Violet Chachki - Damn this girl loves her some period pieces. This one is a Vegas flapper girl with all the sparkles. I really like this look, and I think Michelle Visage is too stuck in her idea of what drag is to appreciate this look. Is it her best drag? Maybe not, but it really does bring her looks on the show full circle.
Ginger Minj - She really did save her best drag for last. Finally on the runway she doesn't look like a hot mess or have some ugly dress on. She looks good in white (as proven by her Elvis drag earlier this season) and this is the Ginger I've always wanted to see.
Pearl - I started the season hated her, but now she is the most featured queen in my reviews. She is hilarious, she is different, and even when she is a hot mess, she is still rocking it. She's got this old Hollywood glamor vibe down, and we've gotten to know this superstar.
It all came down to this. The girls were given an opportunity to say why they should be the winner instead of their competitors. This is where I officially started to see past the shiny cute exterior or Ginger Minj and lose a bit of respect. Unlike the other girls who focused on themselves (or making really awful grammar mistakes like Kennedy), Ginger went on the attack. She really went after Pearl and Violet saying they were young and undeserving. I know Ginger has been around a while, but it's no excuse to be a bully like that. Every version of drag is valid, no matter what they present themselves as. No form of drag is more correct than another.
Ru pits them all in a four way lip sync, and to be honest, this was really boring. It gave me the chance to see Pearl do her intense arm movements one last time, as well as look at how they all really mismatched. Last year the girls all seemed to mesh together as a group very well, but this time we don't get the same feeling. We have four really different queens, and it's all too apparent.
In the end, we finally get Kennedy out of the picture to have our top three. There's no episode next week, just a recap special with the music video premier. Meanwhile, Ru wants us to vote who we want as the winner. Are you Team Ginger, Team Pearl, or Team Violet? Me? I honestly don't care who wins. For the first time ever I like all of the final three. There's no one queen that is obviously not the winner (Phi Phi, Courtney, Roxxxy) and there is no obvious winner (Bianca, Sharon). It is literally anybody's game here.
