Steampunk'd Season 1 Episode 5 [Review]

Dear GSN: Please stop having mid-season breaks in your shows. It's hard enough having to wait a week between episodes, but when you have a week with no new episode, it just is unbearable. Sincerely, Everyone.

But seriously, the wait for this episode was grueling. We are down to the wire with things now, and (almost) no matter who goes home at this point, it's going to be an upset. Never before have I loved a reality TV cast this much, and I hope that they all go on to have major success post-show. But for now, we must find out who did well, and who fell short this week.

The makers enter the room and everything feels weird. There are so few of them left, and my heart aches at the thought of another maker heading home. Unfortunately that is the nature of shows like this, so I guess I'll just have to deal for now.

As per usual, Jeannie doesn't waste anybody's time and tells the makers to gear up for their next assignment. This time around, they are making a nusery. How odd with this being right after Miss Morgan made her steampunk baby clothes (not saying it was planned, but moreso it was odd it worked out this way). Eddie is immediately excited, as he has raised six (!?) kids. Wow. Mai continues explaining that the theme is airships.

In case anybody had forgotten, Miss Morgan was top maker last week (sigh) and gets to have first pick of her team members. I can smell the drama a mile away, as it's fairly obvious that the majority of the cast members hate dealing with Morgan. This could potentially be her downfall this week, but seeing as she's pulled stuff out of thin air all season long, I wouldn't be surprised if she squeezed through another round. Miss Morgan's team ends up being Eddie and JW, with Charles picking Ave and Karianne. Not hating, but I feel like Morgan made the smarter move, as in picking people based off skills, whereas Charles picked his friends.

As another perk for winning top maker in the previous episode, Miss Morgan gets to pick which room she wants. This week the two rooms are not the same, meaning that one if for a boy and one is for a girl. Miss Morgan picks the boy room, leaving with Charles with the girl's room by default.

Behold! It didn't take Miss Morgan three minutes being on the floor to start up some drama. Go figure. She is very power hungry this week, telling Eddie to do the mobile, even though JW had a fleshed out idea for it. As if that's not enough, JW's strong personality, combined with Eddie's hard headed nature, they really seemed to be derailed from the very beginning.

On the other end of the spectrum, Charles's team is doing very well as a cohesive unit. Their plot line of having it be about a boy genius... in a girl's room was a bit confusing. But thankfully there is little to no drama. Karianne goes way out of her usual zone and decides to make the mechanism for the mobile. Ave was staying in her comfort zone with designing the toys which sound similar to her other wind-up devices. Charles goes for the overall room design, which is something he is very capable of. At this point in the episode, I'm on Team Charles.

There are a few snags on both sides. Ave is having a bit of trouble getting the toys constructed and Karianne has a mishap with her light bulb idea, and has to go the long way around with her design. We find out that on day two, Karianne was thinking of her mother. That day was her mother's birthday, and three days later was the day she passed away. Karianne was really letting the day affect her (understandably so), and seemed to pinpoint that as the reason she was struggling so much with the mobile.

On the other side, JW sort of made himself an outcast. Eddie and Miss Morgan were getting along, but JW really felt the room was bad. He felt that the mobile that Eddie made didn't mesh with the rest of the room. It really boiled down to JW wanting to be leader, leading to frightening outburst from Eddie, leading to him punching one of the punkyard lockers hard enough to dent it. Ouch. A lot of the blame lays with Miss Morgan, too, who seemed to be constantly harassing them telling them they can't mess this up for her. Queue my eye roll.

Back on the other side of the work room, Karianne takes a step out for some fresh air, and her well meaning teammates step in to assess the mobile. They both agree it's not kid-friendly enough, and decide to tweek it while she's away. She is very understandably upset given that she spent a full day on it. My heart aches for her. She's been through so much, and she just couldn't wrap her head around this challenge.

Good news comes for Miss Morgan when JW and Eddie decide to play nice on the final day. The two of them getting along may have saved her hide, as the other team seems to be falling apart in the final hours. Karianne did manage to get her mobile into one complete piece. Ave's struggle with her toys was very distressing. Before they can get their collective acts together, Jeannie comes in and tells them it's all over.

This week, they have an HGTV star Sabrina Soto, who happens to be pregnant herself. It's a cute little touch, but I was much more excited to see my girl Kato and the man who gets more handsome with every passing day, Thomas Willeford. Matt King has started to grow on me, at least to the point to where I hope that if we get a season two, they keep him around (if not for his witty comments while judging).

As for the teams:

Team Charles - I love the pink colors in the clothing. Their story was a bit convoluted, but it really did seem fun. It really felt like they threw Ave under the bus when they had her demonstrate the toys, as none of them actually worked. The port holes looked good from afar, but up close were kind of lackluster. The miniature airship Charles made was amazing, but not enough to save the work as a whole. I really really wanted to like this room, but in the end, it fell flat for me, even if all my faves were in one place this week.

Team Miss Morgan - I have to say that as much as I don't want to admit it, Morgan had it together this week. The beams on the walls were crazy awesome, the outfits were good, and the story worked. I didn't like how "not steampunk" the walker was as well as how rushed the older boy's toy car looked. Their mobile was much more simple looking than Karianne's, but it worked with the other moving parts in the room that made it all come together. This team pulled it off this week. It was very funny to hear Sabrina call them out on how unsafe their room was. I believe the term "baby deathtrap" came up. More than once.

The judges were very harsh all the way around. They harped on how unsafe it was, how little Miss Morgan was involved in the design, and Ave not having her toys put together. I've seen evidence that Thomas feels he may have been too harsh, but I haven't seen feedback from Matt or Kato. I, for one, like their brutal honesty.

It really didn't surprise me that Team Miss Morgan won. They move quickly to announce the second place maker, being JW. That leaves Eddie to be the top maker, because he was really the only other standout this week. As for who is leaving from Team Charles, it's anybody at this point.

Midway through the judges grilling Team Charles, Karianne has a breakdown. She tells the judges that the next day will be the anniversary of her mother's death. They take a tender moment to share a heartfelt moment as a team. Ave attempted to take the blame, but being the amazing woman she is, Karianne held her ground and supported Ave, letting her know it's not her fault. Charles is the first person announced as safe, leaving my two favorite ladies to face off against each other. Ave is declared safe, sending Karianne home.

I hate seeing this beautiful soul go home, especially when she is already devastated. She seemed to take it with stride, seeing it as a rebirth for her passion. Good for you, my dear. I wish all the best for you.
