Album Review - Fifth Harmony "Better Together"

Fifth Harmony is my secret obsession. I may not have been into X Factor, but I can say that these five girls have some serious talent. They have been all over the Disney Channel, and they are besties with  Demi Lovato, but now is the time for them to shine on their own. Let's check out Fifth Harmony's debut EP, Better Together.

Fifth Harmony consists of Allyson, Normani, Lauren, Carla, and Dinah, five girls who auditioned for X Factor USA, but failed to make it to the live shows. Somewhere along the way, Simon Cowell got the five of them together and said they would be better together as a group -- hey that's the title! Better Together. It's also the name of a track on their debut EP, one of the most noteworthy of the lot. The song focuses less on them being better as a group and more of them realizing that the boy they broke up with is actually the one and they want him back.

The only true single on the album was "Miss Movin' On". This was the first taste we got of what the girls could truly accomplish as a group outside of the reality TV spectrum. It was a bit out of the box from what I was expecting, having a breakup song as their debut, but it really worked for them. This song showcased exactly what you'd expect from a group named Fifth Harmony, a lot of intricate vocals. It was a good taste of what was to come, but now we have even more.

And by more, I mean one of the best girl band songs I've heard in years. "Don't Wanna Dance Alone" is so poppy and fun that I almost can't stand it. It is all about pining for that one guy that doesn't even notice you no matter how hard you try. It is a song about optimism, but with an undertone that things won't end up the way they want, all set to a bouncy and cute backdrop. This is probably the most catchy track of the year, and I will be greatly disappointed if they don't at least give this a video treatment.

Depending on which version of the album you got, you had different bonus tracks. Target's physical copy received a track called "One Love", while those who purchased it on iTunes got the girls' Radio Disney exclusive track "Me and My Girls", another amazing track that gives the girls a bit more RnB flare.

I have to say I am very impressed. With the girls being so young (the youngest of them not even 18 yet), I was worried they might go for a younger demographic. Thankfully they are producing music accessible to all ages instead of opting for "kids music", as it might most easily be put. While I do love this group's music thus far, I am weary on investing too much energy into the group given their origins as complete strangers when they formed. However, in all their press and even on the TV show they seemed to get along quite well which tips the odds in their favor considerably.

The album is up on iTunes, and has physical copies in your local Target stores. You can also pre-order the all Spanish version that is coming out next month. If you buy it from Walmart.com you get it autographed!
