Interview: Giulietta Is So Pretty In Pink

I've dubbed her Australia's Princess of Pop, and I learned that the title fits her quite well -- I mean she did start at fourteen. Giulietta is becoming famous not only in her home country, but also in the United States as well, being the first unsigned Australian artist to break into the Billboard charts. She's cute, she's sweet, and she's pretty in pink... and I am so lame for not only rhyming but name dropping her newest single. Let's find out about Giulietta!

There is so little info out there on you! Who is Giulietta?

I've been singing since I was four years old and recording since I was about ten. When I was fourteen, I had a song called Dirty House Music that went viral worldwide. Because I was so young when the song exploded, I didn't really have the opportunity to do a lot of shows -- out here in Australia you have to be 18 to perform, and in many clubs in the US it is 21. Thanks to the song, I had a large growing fanbase in the US. I went to the to California for a personal trip, and after posting about it on MySpace, my big fans in Orange County were so excited that they got me booked for my first club show. It was amazing, and really made me start to take my music more seriously and think like an artist. I have been back to the US several time, and released an album along the way. Now it's time to work on the second.

I didn't know you had started so young! That is incredible!

I know!

It's been a while since your first album, Ascension, has been released, but it did break through to the US Billboard charts. That must have been a great feeling, too.

It was really crazy. When I found out, I was in my singing class in LA. I had got an email, and reading through it I saw quickly that I had got number one breakthrough artist on the Billboard charts. From there everything kept escalated. Initially Vertigo was in the top 50, then top 40, and eventually made it to number 16 on the dance charts. It is something that I can say I am very proud of. I know a lot of Australian artists have done it before myself, but I can say I am definitely the first unsigned artist to make it that high on the charts.

You didn't have an indie label?

It was just through myself. The lead single from the album, Vertigo, went viral and got a lot of DJ hits, many of which were actually Billboard DJs. We just kept pushing remixes and more remixes and that's how it got on the charts.

The music industry moves pretty slow, especially for independent artists. I know you just released a new single, but are you still pushing Voodoo?

I'm trying to push everything right now. Voodoo came quickly after last year's Pixelated. Voodoo was more of a visual concept with the video while Pixelated was more of a lyrical focus. The new song, Pretty In Pink, is a nice mix of the two. They each have their own form and I want to push all three of them.

Speaking of Pretty in Pink, what is it about?

It's pretty much about my hair. [laughs] I used to have people come up to me all the time and ask "Why do you have to have pink or magenta colored hair? Why can't you just be normal?"And you know what? It is just who I am. The song is my way of saying I'm ok with me being me.

Did you write the song?

Yes. I have written all the tracks on 911: Code Pink.

You are a talented song writer. I am having to resist singing (horribly) the words to Voodoo.

Thank you!

You know how much I love Voodoo, but how has it, and it's sister song Pixelated, been doing as far as the fans reactions?

Pixelated has done really well. A few independent charts have picked it up. It got up to around number 17. It also picked up in a lot of clubs in the US because it had two videos, which is something you don't see every day. There were several clubs that got the video to show. Voodoo did catch on, but I feel like Pretty In Pink may be the best of the three. It's a bit more commercial and less club based. I definitely want to get some dance remixes of it, though.

How did you find Dall. Diamond? He may not be huge, but he has some amazing talent.

Dallas was a mutual friend of an engineer I know. He is a songwriter himself, so we had started working on a few side projects together. I fell in love with his voice and wanted him on the album. Pretty in Pink was the last song that I had filled for a feature. I had been looking for a long time for someone who fit the part and could write lyrics that corresponded with the feel and message of the song. I had some people interested, but because of the overly girly nature of the track, many of them got scared off. Dallas really pulled through and I was really happy.

I saw those tweets about shooting a video for the song. Is Dallas present for any of the shoots?

He is not unfortunately. The video was filmed in Australia and Dallas is based in the States. We do have a cameo of a Melbourne model that is pretty big. It's pretty exciting.

Other than some behind the scenes pictures, you seem to be keeping this video under tight wraps. Can you tell me what happens?

My so called boyfriend [the one referred  to in the song] gets kidnapped.

Yes, and?

That's all I can say.

Aww! I've never been rejected like this!

[Laughs] I can say that the video isn't as happy as the song makes it sound. It has it's dark undertones.

That will do! Each of the three singles have such different sounds. What other styles do you explore on the album?

I will say many of the song are in that club vibe that I'm known for. There are some R&B and Hip-Hop sounds sprinkled in, as well as a rock-n-roll inspired track that is one of my favorites.

Please say there is a ballad.

There is one special ballad at the very end.

The singles so far are all available for free download. Will the entirety of 911: Code Pink be free?

We are planning to release the entire album for free. It is a gift for my fans that have been supporting me along this incredibly long road. On the plus side, we are going to be releasing a deluxe package that the fans can buy which will allow everybody  to get a hard copy and some goodies as well.

Goodies? What kind of goodies?

It's up for debate at this point in time. It's still a bit away from the release date, so we have been brainstorming. I think we may do a T-shirt or a piece of jewelry such as a necklace or bracelet.

Releasing music for free is probably the best way to get fans.

I know it may get me more fans, but it is really about giving back to those who have supported me. It's a gift for anybody who has supported me, from those who followed me back during Dirty House Music to those just tuning in. I teamed up with local yet amazing producer Simmy to not only thank the fans but show them exactly who I am through my music. Giving it away for free was the obvious decision for us.

When is the release date?

It will come out in July.

Before we go: Who do you want to thank and what would you like to shoehorn in?

Thank you! Thanks for supporting me so much. It means a lot to see your blog posts and tweets. I want to thank all the others like you, doing the same types of things to help me out and keep me motivated -- Just one big thank you to all the fans.

Giulietta is on Twitter! She is also offering all three new singles to download for free right now. Check them out on Soundcloud! The video for Pretty In Pink is due out next week! Til then, check out Voodoo, my personal favorite, featuring a very sexy model. Mmm Body paint.
