Adam Barta Teams Up With... Octomom!?

She's in the tabloids constantly, and she is always in the public eye. Nadya Suleman, known to the public as "Octomom" has had her share of controversies, but that isn't my thing. Thankfully, she is about to move on to what is my thing. No, she's not doing porn (she's already declined that). She is going into music.

Originally thought to be just a joke when she dropped the line "...They want to sign me instead of you!" in Adam Barta's new music video for "Q&A", she has recently announced through RumorFix that she really is going to be working on a song with Adam. I guess that answers the question of exactly who Adam was hinting to in our interview last week.

It all boils down to how the fans feel about this. Adam fans should be excited, because his streak of one single per year is about to be broken (love ya Adam, but you need to pick up the pace!). Fans of Ms. Octomom, however, may be a little concerned. I've not yet heard her sing, so I'll keep my mind open. What I do know is that Adam and Nadya are friends in real life, then again what reality star is he not on good terms with, and  that means they should have some great chemistry together in the studio.

I know I am excited about this one, and I'll be bringing it to all of you as soon as I can get my hands on it. Keep your eyes peeled. They're calling it a Summer jam, and Summer is right around the corner.

Album Review - Brittany McDonald EP

Sometimes it pays to have friends in the blogger world. None of us are able to catch everything, and with so many independent artists out there, it can be easy to lose track of a few of them. Thanks to a helpful hint from Vertigo Schtick, I was able to catch the debut, self-titled full EP from Brittany McDonald. She's been working hard at this for a long time, and it's about time we see it come to fruition.

Song of the Week - Timebomb

When it comes to pop divas, I never know what to expect. Most of the time I just assume what they have coming out will be abysmal and prepare myself to sweep it under the rug. Most of the time, I end up eating my words. Britney has done it (like fifty times), Christina has done it, and most recently Madonna has done it. It's time for Kylie Minogue's comeback.

Maybe it was the horribly unflattering cover that made me want to discredit it instantly. Maybe it was the fact that she hasn't had a hit in the US in over ten years. Anyway, as usual, I end up eating my own words after giving the song the initial listen.That's not to say I'm not glad to see her back, releasing more amazing music, but I guess it just came as a bit of a surprise.

The vocals are light and airy, and the beat is pure dance. This track is a no brainer hit, and is already seeing decent success in the UK. The lyrics here are actually amusing to me, as she takes more of a male approach to sex than the traditional female take. She says that they are on a timebomb and running out of time, so they need to do it right now. Not exactly the romance you'd expect.

We have another pop icon back on the scene. 2012 is turning out to be the year for the divas to showcase just what they are made of. We just need a solid Ke$ha release and that Cher/Gaga track and we may just have one of the best female pop explosions of the past decade. Speaking of which, anybody heard from Mandy Moore lately?

Sorry I Missed It - Emii "Stilettos"

I love this song. I loved it so much that I named it Song of the Week when it came out. For some odd reason I never noticed that a music video was released for it. I even follow her on Twitter, but I guess the news got lost somewhere in the mix. Anyway, allow me to present to you another installment of my newest recurring segment, Sorry I Missed It.



I love how well crafted this video is. Each of the sections and outfits in it are visually pleasing. My favorite of them all is the fabulous housewife look, complete with hair rollers and a glittery Ed Hardy inspired tattoo. Other memorable looks are the dominatrix look (dem nails!) and the "just kicked out of the club" look.

The plot focuses on Emii being booted from a club, and looking through a magazine to find herself in different spreads that come to life, showing off that she is too famous for them. I really like seeing the different sides to her, not keeping to one specific idea of her, while still managing to go over the top with each new look.

The video is pretty good, but it does have it's faults. The extended walking scene, done in one take, gets a bit boring mid way through. It might have been better to keep cutting back to it instead of showing it all in a row, and the normalcy of it really takes away from the extravagance of the other takes.

Despite this, the video remains solid, and Emii looks amazing throughout. The vocals are spot on in the song, and it really leaves me wanting more from her. She hasn't released a song yet this year, and I hope that she has something in the works for all of her fans.

Interview: Giulietta Is So Pretty In Pink

I've dubbed her Australia's Princess of Pop, and I learned that the title fits her quite well -- I mean she did start at fourteen. Giulietta is becoming famous not only in her home country, but also in the United States as well, being the first unsigned Australian artist to break into the Billboard charts. She's cute, she's sweet, and she's pretty in pink... and I am so lame for not only rhyming but name dropping her newest single. Let's find out about Giulietta!

Music News: Kwanza Jones On Billboard Dance Charts!

The buzz this week has been all about Adam Lambert breaking ground with his very gay number one album, and I am really happy for him, but I think there is another special artist who deserves some recognition. Before you jump down my throat, loyal Glambert readers, I really recommend you check her out. Kwanza Jones definitely deserves some time in the spotlight.

 

Kwanza is a great friend, and an equally amazing artist, so I have to say that she deserves her spot on the charts. This week, all of her hard work promoting, touring, and tweeting (Hey, now, Tweeting is hard work!) has payed off. "Time To Go" has landed on the Billboard Dance Charts at number 47! I've done my best to support her over the past year or so, and I know that many others have her back with remixes, contest entries, and blog posts. It's been a long time coming, and I know we can push this track even higher on the charts.

And quickly, if I may, I'd like to leave a public, yet personal message directly to Ms. Jones:

I am so proud of you, Kwanza. I know you work hard, and I know you are genuinely sweet. I can't wait until we can speak again, work together again, and maybe even see you on tour! You know that crazy squeal of yours is what I live for. Seriously, I'mma need that as my text ringtone.

New Video: Nadia Oh "Slapper (Ayye)"

Nadia Oh... Dear lord, Nadia Oh. I have been a fan of yours for years, and to this day, I am still unsure if you are serious, or just trolling everybody. Maybe it's part of the reason I like her... or maybe I just like her because she makes some sick music. The queen of Moombahton may be exploring new musical genres, but her hilariously static vocals are still her signature. Check out her video for her newest smash "Slapper". Ayyyyye~




So pretty much the entire music video is her trying on different clothes, most of which I am pretty sure are made out of colored tissue paper. Who knows? To be honest, I was hoping to see some horribly green screened takes of her on the motorcycle from the single cover.

The exciting part is that this means the song is a legitimate single, not associated with her last album (like some after-album singles turned out to be). Hopefully, that means that by the end of the year or beginning of 2013 we will have another smashing Nadia album to rock out to. I'll do my best to get the scoop for you guys!

Interview: A Little Q&A With Adam Barta

I don't think I have ever been more impressed with an artist I've interviewed before. I've known about Adam Bart for a while now and always found his music enjoyable, but after a closer look, I found out that he not only is a talented writer, but also has more connections in the New York area than any body else I've ever spoken to. No, really. If they are on TV and from New England, he probably knows them. It's time for us to drop more names in ten minutes that Pollo Del Mar!

Song of the Week - Only The Horses

Call me a hipster. Call me a poser. Call me what you like. The Scissor Sisters are probably the most famous band you don't know -- unless maybe you are British. The group has had some massive hits, but yet when I ask people who they are, they are clueless. Let's hope their newest single changes this. Check out "Only The Horses".

Being a little more mainstream and a lot less disco, this track really surprised me. I hadn't heard much from them in the past few years, so seeing them on the front page of iTunes was a shock to me. It wasn't so much that I didn't think they were good enough, but mostly given that they are far more popular overseas, much to my own dismay. Much like one of my other favorite bands (Black Kids), the US radio airwaves just don't seem to "get" this group.

 Being a heavy mix of piano and hard driven beats, it definitely is a unique track and a nice break from the what has been making it's way through my iPod lately. Jake's strange voice adds a nice touch to the song as well, leaving Ana with the backing vocals. My favorite part of the song, the bridge, comprises of a harmonic "Nayoo" type vocal, sounding like a train.

Interesting, unique, and game changing, this song is definitely worth checking out. These guys may be veterans by now, but they aren't going to let their fans down. You can get the song on iTunes.

By the way I'm in love with the cover. Amazing.

Sahara Davenport and Manila Luzon Cover "Supermodel"

I love these two a lot. Sahara, who was one of the first people to jump on and help out here at Taking Over The Universe, and I really owe her so much. As far as Manila, I may not have interviewed her yet, but she still retweets and makes amazing music for me to talk about. These two have finally done a song together, which is what every fan of theirs has been asking of them since they started making music. They worked together to cover momma Ru Paul's classic hit "Supermodel."

Album Review - Cherri Bomb "This Is The End Of Control"

Back in the 70s, a band hit the scene that broke all the rules. They were all girls, they were playing punk music like no other, and they were only sixteen. Since then, many have attempted to follow in the footsteps of The Runaways, but none have been able to accomplish that until now.  Appropriately named, Cherri Bomb may be seen as the heirs to The Runaways' throne, but they are certainly making their own path through the music industry.

Album Review - Adam Lambert "Trespassing"

How could I ignore such an amazing pop album? I may not be too into the mainstream pop scene, but I have an incredible soft spot for Adam Lambert. Despite my general apathy for American Idol, Lambert is one of the few that have really broke away from that stigma and managed to make interesting music. His newest masterpiece, "Trespassing" is an interesting excursion through the past, present, and future of pop music.

Giulietta is "Pretty In Pink"

Giulietta has been taunting me for the past couple of weeks with this song. She released a small sample of the track not long ago, and ever since I have been craving more. Luckily for me (and you, for that matter) she has finally released it -- and for now you can download it for free! Get to know "Pretty In Pink."

I have to say that with each single release, I like Giulietta more and more. "Pretty In Pink" is a sweet pop song with a lot of R&B undertones floating around with that. Compound that with an actually good guest rap and you have all the makings for a great track. Giulietta is trying her hardest to break through into the US pop scene, which is one of the hardest charts to reach. I hope this song is that push she needs to make her goals a reality.

The track itself gives off a Nicki Minaj "Right Thru Me" vibe, having that climbing vocals that draw you in and keep you interested, but it manages to keep it's own identity away from being simply a copy. Beneath it's cheery chorus lies some hard break up subject matter in the verses. The song's dual layering makes it not only just another pop song, but a work of art.

Dall. Diamond did a great job at actually having a guest rap/vocal that actually fit into the song and added to the story. I can't wait to hear more from him. Going by Dallas Diamond sometimes, his solo music is worth checking out, too.

Drag U Season 3 Cast and Promos Revealed!

Drag U is the first of (now) two spin offs from Ru Paul's Drag Race, and stars the contestants from all seasons of the show to give biological women the confidence of drag queens. In each episode, three queens serve as mentors to three ladies, and each episode has it's own winner. It may not be the most exciting thing ever, but it is awesome seeing all of my favorites back on TV again.

It's that time again. For the past two years, I have been watching Drag U in the summers to keep me held over until Drag Race brings in new queens. Thankfully, we now have Drag Race All Stars to keep us even more emerged in the world of Drag. This means we only have to go a few months without her beloved Ru Paul.

The cast for this semester at Drag U has been announced, and I have to say that it is a bit... shocking to say the least. Of course, from the Drag Race Reunion, we know that Latrice is going to be on the list, but take a look at who else is making an appearance. The professor's list includes: JuJuBee, Manila Luzon, Raja, Raven, Shannel, Alexis Mateo, Mariah, Chad Michaels, Willam, Morgan McMichaels, Pandora Boxx, Delta Work, and Sharon Needles.

Yes. Willam. Surprising, no? I mean I always loved her, but she was constantly criticized for her make up, beard, and reliance on designer materials. I guess her hilarious one liners got her in, and being that she was one of the break out stars of season four, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. It will be exciting to see Willam again.

Also added to the roster this year are Raja and Delta, leading me to hope for a Heathers themed episode, given that Manila is back for another season. Alexis is on the list, too, which isn't too much of a shock, but still a bit odd that they waited so long to add a top three contestant to the list.

It really does look like this season will be amazing... as long as they put Willam and Pandora Boxx in a lot of episodes. Given that Willam is in the promo for the new season (below), I'd say that she is one of the main focuses.

Song of the Week - Sing It

Please allow me to take a moment to breathe before you start hatin' on me.

In my defense, it's been a slow few weeks for the music scene. In Rebecca's defense, the song actually isn't horrible. No really. The song is a vast improvement over her debut with "Friday" both lyrically and vocally. Seriously guys. Stop shaking your head at me while you read this. I know, I know. The name Rebecca Black shall forever be shadowed by her rough start, but maybe she can turn things around.

Honestly, I hated "Friday". It was bad. I'm sure she knows it was bad, but it did it's job at getting her into the spotlight, and I think it was the driving force to prove herself. "Sing It" provides less rocky vocals and a more solid and believable sound. It may not be the best song out there, but I am giving her a nod for her immense growth over such a short period. To me, it sounds like she would fare better in the realm of country music, but that is just a personal opinion of mine.

Album Review - Quigley "Pleiades"

I love free music. No, not going on Limewire and stealing music, but when artists decide to release music for free. It is a great way to build up a fan base, and artists such as Colette Carr, Simon Curtis, and Frankmusik have released free demos, EPs, and even albums to get fans and create hype for them. Quigley, a new artist, has made the decision to release her debut EP for free, and the world needs to check it out.

Album Review - Karmin "Hello"

So I'll be honest. I don't listen to the radio that often. When I do, it's to listen to a radio talk show featuring a crazy lady named Kim give depressed people advice. I had no idea that Karmin, the duo who have been turning heads on YouTube for years, had finally made it big until I noticed their number on album on iTunes. Yes, I bought it blindly and without hesitation. No, I don't regret it.

One Year Anniversary Thank You

I can't believe it. I have made it one entire year. I know that most other bloggers have been doing this for countless years, but they often forget about those who start up blogs, and quickly loose interest after a few weeks. I think that the one year mark is an achievement I should be proud of.

If you would have told me a year ago that I would be anywhere near I am today, I would call you a liar and punch you in the face. I have come a long way from being a complete nobody. I've stepped up to being only a semi-nobody. Great, no?But the purpose of this post is not (only) to talk about how great I think I am. I really want to take a few moments out to thank everyone who has helped me thus far.

First and foremost, I need to thank Pollo Del Mar. Without this fabulous drag queen, I wouldn't have been able to do any of what I am doing now. Without giving it a second thought, he gave me advice and got me not only my first official interview, but also helped me get countless other interviews secured. Thank you, Momma Del Mar!

Speaking of interviews, I would like to thank everyone who allowed me to speak with them over the past year. Thank you Young London, XELLE, Mason Black, Angel Anatomy, Phi Phi O'Hara, Jada, The Princess, Kwanza Jones, Chris DiSario, Pandora Boxx, Sahara Davenport, Jipsta, and everyone else I have spoken to over the past year.

I would also like to thank all of my friends who have supported me through this adventure. Song of the Week - Video Killed The Radio Star

No, guys. I'm not stupid. I know this song is from way back. As a matter of fact, I am aware that it was the very first music video on MTV. Ever. But this version is different. I've already talked about how much I love this track, but it's now available on iTunes, which means it's eligible for Song of the Week.

I know what you are thinking. It is a cover, but it is a single, and they are Young London, one of my favorite groups ever. Passing Colette Carr for most times chosen for Song of the Week, Young London never cease to amaze me. This cover will not disappoint anyone, whether you are a fan of the original, or just hearing it for the first time. Pop duo Young London breathes new life into a well known and beloved song.

The song, a classic as far as I'm concerned, is about a budding starlet who's career is cut short by music videos. Ironic, given it's legacy. Matt and Sarah do this song great justice, adding in their own electro-pop style, proving that the 80's songs can hold up compared to today's music. The lyrics remain the same, but the vocals differ greatly, having a lot of extra notes and electronic stutters.

Regardless of it's status of being a cover, the track is still a single. You can buy it on iTunes.

Drag Race 4 Cast Off Roundup Finale

It's over, people. It's finally over. Don't get me wrong, I love Drag Race, but this year was so intense. It will be nice to have a break for a while before Drag U. Now we have the final four. I'm sure you've all been waiting for me to eat my words on these last few queens. This post compares my initial thoughts on the girls from the promos and interviews. You can check out parts one, two, and three also.

First up: Miss Latrice Royal!

"Latrice Royale is another one of the big queens for this season. She isn't as polished as the rest of them. Her voice was way too deep for her look. I'm not talking cute Raja deep. I'm talking awkward Tyra deep. Bad deep. Her hair wasn't there. Her makeup was shoddy. I just wasn't feeling this one at all. Oh well. I can't be nice all the time, right?"

I have never been more wrong. She did look a bit busted in the promo, but she turned it out time and time again on the show. Both her personality and her style have shown through time and time again, and I think she rightfully won the title of Miss Congeniality. If I have one regret about my conduct over this season of Drag Race, it is judging Latrice too quickly. 

And for the top three - Phi Phi

"Phi Phi O'Hara left a bad taste in my mouth. She spent a lot of her interview talking about how she is a role model, and I wasn't buying it. She really did have a great look, and she is really good about bragging about herself (almost as good as I am), so I guess the first bit could be overlooked."

There is no denying that Phi Phi is the biggest villain to ever be on Drag Race. She was manipulative, spiteful, and crafty. But that wasn't really a bad thing in my opinion. She may be hated by 99% of the fandom, but consider me one of that 1% because honestly, I would have done almost everything she did. Hate me if you want.

And now for Chad.

"Chad Micheals. Oh, Chad. I thought I had my opinion of you down pat before. Chad is already a big name in the drag community, most well known for his Cher impersonations (which he does VERY well, I might add) and I was shocked to see him in this competition. Much like the already rather famous Raja, I questioned why they chose her... and then I saw the interview. She is very, very nice and well put together. She may be the oldest of them all, but she is still stunning and has got the poise and grace that I feel so many of these girls lack."

My opinion on Chad hasn't changed a bit. She handled herself very well, and always kept her poise and grace. She was often criticized for being "too perfect." I don't see how that is a flaw, really. This one has had 20 years of experience, and it shows. 

And the Winnah! Sharon Needles!

"Sharon Needles. Oh, dear god where do I begin? She looks like a hot mess, as if she were trying to do Lady Gaga, but got drunk half way through getting dressed, but she is totally hilarious. I'm talking Pandora Boxx level hilarious -- and Tammie Brown genius. She is weird and outlandish, and pulls it off in a way that will either have you shocked or rolling on the floor with laughter, and I'm sure she'd love either one. She is definitely the stand out queen for me this season. Let's see anybody else who can take camp to a whole new level like this bitch."

She really was the best of both worlds. Funny like Pandora, weird like Tammie. I wasn't a big fan of her personality over the course of the show, teetering back and forth between a huge ego and announcing that everyone at home hates her. Regardless of how I feel, though, she won by both fan vote and Ru approval, so she must have been doing something right. Cheers to you, Ms. Needles!

Sorry I Missed It - Dance With The Devil

Yup. Another new segment. This time, I am going to take a look at some things I missed, and truly regret I did. Sometimes it's because I didn't know it existed and others because I didn't realize it's genius at the time. Regardless, this is the first installment of "Sorry I Missed It." First up: "Dance With The Devil" by a little foreign new wave band I've loved since the dawn of time, The Sounds.




Remember the movie Snakes on a Plane? Hardly. Well that was this group's big entrance into America. Their lead vocalist, Maja, was featured in the theme song along side Cobra Starship and Travis McCoy. Well that was two albums ago. Now, the group has evolved and developed their new wave style. This track, straight off of their latest album "Something To Die For", was a bit hard to swallow for fans at first, given it's strong electro-pop sound.

The video is a bit shocking. The group is being held at gunpoint, tied up, in front of a firing squad. Occasionally, Maja is shown singing in the fetal position completely naked. Eventually, they free themselves and sing the rest of the song, even through a gas attack. Some scenes, especially the closeups on Maja naked, have drawn comparisons to Lady Gaga, given the similarities in their hair and make up, as well as the look and feel of the shot. The rest of the video, however, keeps its individuality.

The dramatic feel of the song meshes very well with the video, and it's message of unity shines through well. It may not have been exactly what people expected out of the group after their previous album, but it works, and it still feels distinctly like The Sounds.

Why Did I Miss It? 
Honestly, I'm not sure. I knew that they had a new album out, but a mix of financial problems and a busy schedule kept me away from this album. Another big factor was that there were no singles released off this album for the US. What ever he reason is, I really am sorry that I missed this song and video. I'll do better in the future!

No Doubt Is Back!

For real this time. I'm not kidding you. It's a month too late for April fools. This is not a drill people. Get ready for No Doubt to re-enter the music scene and rule the number one spot yet again!

Thank you Jesus. THE band from my childhood, responsible for my love of both ska and run down amusement parks. No Doubt was a hot ticket back in the day, and the have left a legacy that hardly any band has lived up to... And then Gwen Stefani went solo. Her music was amazing for what it was ("What You Waiting For" is still one of my favorite songs and music videos ever). They got back together afterwards for touring, and teased fans about a new album. What did we get? A cover of a forgotten 80's track, "Stand and Deliver" on a prime time drama. Was I the only person who liked that track?

Here we are, almost three years later, and out of the blue, the band drops a bomb.

"We hope you like the new video and the big news - the new album will be out on September 25th.  We are incredibly excited to share the new music with you. Ear candy coming your way!

September 25! It may be a ways away, and I know a lot can change in between now and then, but I am certainly pumped. The band announced previously that they will incorporate more ska styled music in with their new reggae sound. There are a lot of rumors flowing around, particularly on the "100% reliable" Wikipedia, about song titles and lyrics, but I think I'll wait for something more substantial before I make another move. 

But still guys. September 25! Oh God!

Happy (Late) Birthday, Pandor Boxx!

I'm about nine hours late (my time), but at least I didn't forget all together. I always feel lame wishing someone a happy birthday on Facebook, so I am going to abuse my status in the media to wish a very special lady a very happy belated birthday!

It's impolite to say how old a woman is, so I won't even dare, but I do have to say that she should feel very accomplished. She has been on several national television shows, released a single that charted next to Madonna, and has been a fan favorite since she first appeared on the scene. Always funny and always on point, she knows how to take criticism with a smile and a whole lot of poise.

Pandora has meant a lot to me since I first saw her on Ru Paul's Drag Race. Back then, I knew very little about drag queens, and she truly opened my eyes in a lot of ways. I can honestly say that I was coming back every week to see what she would do next, and if not for Raven, I would have stopped watching the show when she got the boot.

Not long after winning "Miss Congeniality" for season two, she went on to be on the spin off show, Ru Paul's Drag U, helping women bring out their inner queens. And you know what? She got the fan favorite for both seasons of that show, too! She may have some competition next year, as Latrice Royale has quite the fanbase now.

So why the reason for the big production? The only reason I can offer you is because I care. Pandora is such a sweet person. She allowed me to interview her about her debut single, "Cooter", back before I was even half as internet famous as I am now. She is constantly tweeting and retweeting me. "Let It Go" Is Dragonette's Newest Video

A couple of weeks back, I chose Dragonette's newest single as Song of the Week because it was catchy and a breath of fresh air. Now, they have released an official music video for the track. Check out "Let It Go" the official video from Dragonette.




While the video doesn't exactly add anything to the song's meaning, it does make for an interesting trip. Martina is kidnapped off the street and subjected to several experiments and examinations. The rest of the crew are the doctors who are putting her through the wringer.

Mixed in with the somewhat disturbing segments are bits where Martina, along with a few other people, are being observed in a yellow tinted room dancing their hearts out.  I couldn't get over Martina's new mullet. I'm not sure why, but it really bothered me.  Well that, combined with the awkward petting of a bunny through a wall.

To be honest, I don't really get the video. It's amusing, and the dancing segments are great, but I'm not sure what is going on exactly. I am just glad to see that the old Dragonette is back. They had been laying low for the past couple of years, only releasing some remixes and a couple of individual, non-single tracks.
